| Now that the kids have been weaned I suppose it is time to name the remainder who as yet have no name. Each of my goats is named. I couldn't abide referring to them by tags or saying "Come here, number three." That wouldn't do for me. I've heard of many systems for naming, some complex, some easy, some extremely sensible; for instance, I know one farmer who picks names beginning with a letter of the alphabet. The first year all names begin with A, the second with B and so on. This certainly would make it easy to remember what year the animal was born. Another farmer made naming into a game so that her children could learn about geography or historical figures. One year the goats were named after rivers in Texas and one year after Lone Star heroes and heroines. While all these systems are clever and fun, I (as in everything else in life) have always wanted to put my own spin on things. I, therefore, find it much more fun to spend time with my goats until a name pops into my head that absolutely fits their personality. Now this has led to many seemingly prosaic names such as Jenny and Sadie and Molly but it has also produced some rather unusual names such as P. Wilfrid Hunnicut (P. Wilfrid for short) and Mrs. Agnes Piddletench who, of course, is as matronly as her name sounds. Then there is "Little Man" who only weighs about 20 lbs. at the moment but who will, I know, grow into a 200 lbs. buck. I should probably rethink his name. Other somewhat odd names invariably creep in such as Zip or Jazz or Mystery but if you knew these girls you would understand. Just as you would completely understand the names Lulu and Sassy should you ever meet them. The only one who is possibly misnamed is Claire. Now I bought Claire and she had already been named and as I am partial to the name of Claire, thinking it very feminine and quite lovely, I kept it. Claire is indeed feminine and lovely to look upon but clearly a more appropriate name for her would be Diva. I think you get the picture. Until next time... |
